Less is more

Many people have asked for help with an update to the look of their living/working spaces without involving great time and expense.   It sounds like an impossible task, however with a bit of  patience and re-organization it can be a successful exercise.

The most basic design principle is your guide, less is more.   A few carefully selected, well placed accessories will revive your interior and improve the overall appeal .  These items need not be expensive and should appeal to you, the owner, as well as bring your own character to the space.    “I love to see all my stuff”, you say?   If you have many personally valuable items you want to display, divide them into groups by theme or colour and change your focal pieces with the seasons.  If you try to show all your favorites all the time it will become over whelming and cluttered, plus rotating your items gives you the chance to consider new uses for each one or if it is time to pass some on to another treasure hunter.

Here are some examples of simple ways to begin your updating project.  By clearing out some of the tired items left from the fall or winter celebrations and adding fresh spring and summer items you can liven up your spaces quickly.  Updating display photos of family and events will keep your look current and dynamic.  Bright throw cushions in social areas and towels in the powder room used as accent also add colour and interest.  Add or interchange artwork with large mirrors and other wall hangings.   Remember to consider the size and scale of each piece on the wall surface, small items will get lost on a large display area.  Another quick and easy item to add or change to achieve a big impact is window covering.  It’s addition can bring texture to the room and soften the window edge as well as addressing light control and can also help with temperature control.  There are a side variety of styles available to meet the various needs of each space.  Your local designer and window covering experts can help you find the right solution.

Designing a commercial space vs residential

A design solution for commercial space differs from  residential design in many ways.  A commercial space supports and promotes a business which requires an environment that  assists in the business operation as well as presenting a desirable corporate image.   The materials used to accomplish this need to be  suitable, durable, cost effective and appealing to the client base.  Higher traffic areas require more resilient finishes to ensure premature wear is not a factor and that the client gets a better return on their investment.

Commercial grade carpet can both be appealing and meet high traffic wear standards.  One product we use and like is InterfaceFLOR carpet tile.  The line offers something for each unique application from budget pleasing, durable  and easy to maintain for busy public spaces to more sophisticated corporate or hospitality selections.  It has been installed in several spaces right in Kamloops so you can keep a look out for it and see it for yourself.  You’ll find it in the Best Western on Columbia St.(Public Spaces), Kamloops Alliance Church (Fireside rm.), and the Kamloops Airport (Check-In/Security & Hold Room).

What does an Interior Designer do?

In short, a professionally trained interior designer can create or alter an existing environment to suit the client’s specific needs and desires. In the initial phase, called programming, the objective is to identify how a space is to be used and by whom. A visit to view the site is always helpful if dealing with one that exists, those under construction or projects in the developmental phases do not always allow for a site visit.  Once on site, or by compiling data, inventories of equipment/furnishings can be made as well as identifying the positive attributes and potential challenges of the project.

Now we have enough information to formulate a design plan,  put together some cost estimates for the project and review this information with the client.
